PROJECT: AGAPE – Breast Cancer

  • July 29, 2026

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer develops when abnormal breast cells grow uncontrollably and form a tumor. It may begin in the milk ducts, lobules, or surrounding breast tissue.

Not all breast lumps are cancerous, but any new breast change should be evaluated promptly by a healthcare professional.

Signs & Symptoms to Watch Out For

Consult your doctor if you notice:

• A new breast lump or thickening
• Change in breast size or shape
• Skin dimpling or redness
• Nipple inversion
• Bloody or unusual nipple discharge
• Persistent breast pain or swelling
• Enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit

Risk Factors

Factors that may increase risk:

• Age 40 years and above
• Family history of breast or ovarian cancer
• Inherited gene mutations (e.g., BRCA)
• Previous breast disease
• Obesity and sedentary lifestyle
• Smoking and alcohol use
• Hormonal factors
• Lack of regular screening

SCREENING & EARLY DETECTION

Early detection improves treatment outcomes.

Breast Self-Awareness
Know the normal look and feel of your breasts and report any changes.

Clinical Breast Examination
Performed by a trained healthcare professional.

Mammography
Recommended regularly for women based on age and risk factors.

Breast Ultrasound
Useful for evaluating lumps and dense breast tissue.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment depends on the stage and biology of the cancer.

• Surgery
• Chemotherapy
• Radiation therapy
• Hormonal therapy
• Targeted therapy
• Immunotherapy
• Supportive and palliative care

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

Seek medical consultation if you experience:

• A persistent breast lump
• Unexplained breast changes
• Nipple discharge
• Swelling under the arm
• Breast pain that does not resolve

Do not delay evaluation even if symptoms seem mild.
