Calamba Medical Center’s Urinalysis Test

  • August 16, 2024

A urinalysis test examines urine and its contents, such as blood cells, proteins, and other substances.

The content within one’s urine mirrors the state of one’s health; furthermore, it can help diagnose various medical conditions, which include the following:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Diabetes
  • Liver disorders
  • Dehydration
  • Kidney diseases

It is also part of the standard tests, like the complete blood count test.

Reasons To Have A Urinalysis Test

  • Non-Invasive Procedure
  • Regular Health Check
  • Pregnancy Assessment
  • UTI Diagnosis
  • Chronic Condition Monitoring
  • Kidney Stone Screening
  • STD Testing

Urine Test Results Explained

Urine Visual Examination

  • Clarity/Turbidity – Your healthcare provider will note whether your urine is clear or cloudy. Another word that can help describe your urine is “turbid.” The term means that the urine is thick and has suspended substances.
  • Color – This aspect analyzes the color of the urine and if it contains any blood.
  • Odor – The smell of the urine will also be reviewed, especially if it does not smell normal.
  • Foam Content –  The foaminess of your urine is examined. It also denotes its protein content.

Microscopic Test

The following are examined:

  • Bacteria, parasites, or yeast
  • Red or white blood cells
  • Urinary casts. These are tube-shaped particles that have different substances and cells.
  • Urinary crystals
  • Sperm

Chemical Dipstick test

A chemical strip will be submerged in the sample to change its color. Some aspects include:

  • Acidity (pH)
  • Concentration/specific gravity. The concentration of particles inside your urine is linked to the body’s fluid levels, measured in the test.
  • Glucose. This is a sugar that helps provide energy to the cells and body.
  • Protein. These help the body function. Small amounts are present in the urine. However, they are more present in the blood.

Urinalysis is also part of the executive check-up and pre-employment medical exam.

It is advised to regularly take urine tests, especially if you have underlying conditions such as kidney disease and diabetes. You should also take the test if you are considered at high risk for these conditions.

If your urine test results are abnormal, we recommend that you take more tests to verify your underlying conditions.

FAQs about Urinalysis Test Results

What is a urinalysis test for?

A urinalysis test reviews the composition, content, and properties of a person’s urine and provides critical information about the person’s health in numerous aspects.

What indicates a UTI?

The content of your urine can indicate UTI. If your urine has bacteria and more than ten (10) white blood cells, you may have a UTI.

What are the normal results for urinalysis?

A typical urinalysis result should have the following:

  • Color – A light/pale to dark/deep amber yellow
  • Clarity – Clear or cloudy
  • pH – 4.5-8
  • Bacteria and yeast – none

Can I drink water before the test?

Yes, drinking water before the test is okay because it can help you produce enough urine for the test. However, be mindful about the amount of water you consume. Drinking too much water may affect your results. Thus, if you drink, make sure you are mindful of it; you should drink if you feel thirsty, not if you want a more significant urine sample.
